Until the early years of the 20th century, the road was mainly referred to as Church Green, as in the 1911 census.

Frederick Jeffries - Coal Merchant. (K1916) Kelly's Directory records that from 1903 to 1916, Frederick Jeffries ran a coal business at Southwold Railway Station. No 22 Cumberland Road may have been his home and office.

Thomas Isaac Jefferies - Apartment owner (K1916). The 1911 Census records Thomas Isaac,(Age 45, married to Maria, no children) Nurseryman at '22 Church Green' in 1911. Not known what the relationship between Frederick 'Jeffries' and Thomas 'Jefferies' is.
