Until the early years of the 20th century, the road was mainly referred to as Church Green, as in the 1901 and 1911 census.

1850
Henry Oldring dies this year and his son, Henry Oldring (Jnr) puts the rope ground up for sale at auction.. It is bought by John Leverett, a gentleman farmer and entrepreneur of Walberswick.

1880
The original ropeworks building is converted into five three-storey homes.

This terrace of houses (Cumberland Terrace) occupies the site of the rope works buildings. These were among the first homes on Cumberland Road.
