1854
to 1890
James Maggs - Schoolmaster, Collector,
Borough Surveyor, Auctioneer, Appraiser, House Agent
and Chronicler. Maggs is best known for his meticulously
detailed Southwold Diary which he maintains from 1818
until 1876 and which remains an invaluable source
of local social history. Maggs has been left this
property by his old friend William Prettyman
(Landlord of the Harbour Inn at Blackshore)
and lives here until his death at the age of 93. (M,
W1874) More about Maggs here.
1896
Bartholomew George Piller - Gas fitter.
The Southwold Gas Light Company was founded in 1848
on the initiative of local iron founder and engineer
George Edmund Child. In 1898 Southwold's
pioneering gas works is producing over 3 million cubic
feet of coal gas with a workforce of just three of
which Bartholomew Piller is presumably one.
