The Sad fate of Major Rawlings
Told by J B Harris in his 'Memories of Southwold - 1920-1939', reproduced by kind permission of his widow, Mary Harris.
"The ... stables run by Major Rawlings was a superior affair with 'Hunters and Hacks for Hire'. Sad to say, Rawlings was the victim of a confidence trickster. He was approached by a man who explained that he was the rightful heir to a vast fortune, the 'Wenhaston Millions'. He just needed a few thousand pounds to establish his claim. One can only assumee that he had convincing looking documents to support his story, and Rawlings parted with his life savings. Neither the man nor the money were seen again." |
